Week 3 Reading Notes (Part B)

1.     Dashartha died and the boys did not know
2.     The funeral: threw the body into the fire and sang chants
3.     The brothers, Rama and Bharata met in the jungle and wept
4.     The Sandals:
-Reminds me of the ruby slippers and Dorothy
-Rama puts on the sandals given to him by Bharata
-The brother promised Rama that he would stay in the jungle for 14 years while he returns to Ayodhya (the city)
- He put bark on himself and went back into the jungle (because Rama was banished, he is taking his place himself)
-He protected the sandals (they were a symbol of royal authority)
5. Anasuya was the wife of an ancient sage
6. Viradha: demon Rama defeats in the forest
7. The ugly Shurpanakha (daughter of a demon king of Lanka) fell in love with Rama and professes his love for Sita and rejects her marriage offer
8. She wanted to kill Sita but Rama attacked her to protect Sita
9. Golden Deer: Maricha took the shape of a golden deer to lure in Rama to hunt him
10. Jatayu watched over Rama and the other exiles in the jungle (mighty bird)
