Reading Notes: Week 9 (Part A)






1.     Princes of Elephant City (lineage of the characters)
-       A king is Hastinapura had two sons: Pandu and Dhritarashtra (who is blind)
-       Pandu has 5 sons called the Pandavas
-       All 5 are said to be sons of gods
-       Pandu dies and his brother becomes king
-       Dhritarashtra has one hundred sons called the Kauravas and they all grow up together with the Pandavas (they are all descendants of King Bharata)
-       The Pandavas were always the best students, according to the teacher Drona
-       Drona sends all the Bharatas to attack his enemy, Drupada. Drupada prays for avenge and Draupadi, a beautiful girl, comes out of his fire sacrifice.
-       Duryodhana gets jealous when the father names Yudhishthira the heir to the throne, so he plans to burn the Pandavas. Some others were burned, and he thought they were the Pandavas, so he celebrated
-       Then, to escape without Durodhana knowing, the Pandavas disguise themselves as Brahmins and hide in the forest

2.     Draupadi
-       Many suitors wanted her because she was so beautiful
-       Her brother made an archery contest to see who will win her
-       Karna (the secret child of Arjuna’s wife, kunti, and the sun-god) did not win the contest because Draupadi refuses to marry him
-       Arjuna wins the contest and the suitors become very angry
-       He duals karna, and Draupadi is destined to marry all 5 Pandavas

3.     Yudhishthira’s Gambling
-       Duryodhana is more and more jealous of King Y each time he succeeds in anything
-       King Y likes to gamble, do Duryodhana’s uncle advises him to get revenge by gambling against him. His uncle Shakuni is a very skilled gambler.
-       He invites King Y and the Pandavas to a game of dice
-       King Y realizes he cannot beat Shakuni, but he still cannot turn down a game
-       King Y loses everything: he sold himself, Draupadi, and his brothers to slavery
-       He drags Draupadi to the throne room by her hair and tries to tear off her clothes, but the gods protect her
-       Bhima (one of the Pandavas) gets enraged and threatens to kkill Duryodhana
-       Draupadi is granted a boon, and she chooses to free Yudhishthira (this outrages Duryodhana)
-       Because he is so angry, he challenges Yudhishthira to another game (and he agrees of course), and he lost and the Pandavas were exiled into the forest for 12 years
